Brief History

A Short History of College.

The infant alma-mater took birth on 12.08.1982, the auspicious day, Lord Krishna incarnated in the mortal coil to disseminate his versatile sermon for the riddance of mankind. The founders of this institution consecrated Lord Krishna on its threshold, is undoubtedly something unique and most probably to attract the inmates for moulding themselves ethically and spiritually steadfast, virtuous and well conversant about the real mission of life.

This institution was named after the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, to commemorate his out standing contribution for the emancipation of our motherland and for building the modern India. To keep his love and affection for children ever alive and unfaded and imbibe the future citizens of India with the idea of universal love, amity, peace and harmony, this rural institution emerged as " Jawaharlal Nehru College " in the central place of Mahanga Block.

Mahanga, the cradle of Orissa literature , culture and religion the birth place of notable poets like Ganakabi Baishnab Pani, Pallikabi Nanda Kishore Bal, Dhaneswar Pani, Dwitiya Bhanja Golak Chandra Pradhan, Dramatist Adinatyakar Jagamohan Lal, scholars like Bagmi Biswanatha Kar, Pyarimohan Acharya, Artist Bimbadhar Barma incredibly was without a College of Higher Education till 1981.

The Educationist and poet Sri Bikram Keshari Barma had established J.N. B.Ed. College at Kuanpal in 1981. Consistent effort was made by him with active support of Late Baishnab Charan Swain, Sri Niranjan Swain, Sri Kulamani Swain, Sri Gauranga Charan Behura and villagers of Alijoda, who contributed the land for the establishment of a college. To realise the dream of Sri B.K Barma, a college committee entrusted with the task of raising funds and having other necessary requisites was formed in 1982.

The dream became true. The College was established in the name of first Prime MInister of Free India in form of Jawaharlal Nehru, Vana Vihar, Kuanpal. The college campus is named as Vana Vihar. This college stands on the side of Salipur-Kuanpal Road at a distance of 1 km north from Kuanpal, 8 kms from Balichandrapur and 15 kms north from Salipur which is 25 kms distance east from Cuttack

Initially the committee succeeded in opening I.A. class with 128 seats affiliated to Utkal University in July 1982. CHSE granted affiliation to the same 128 seats in 1983-84 with the subjects like English, Oriya, History, Economics, Political Science, Logic and Vocational subject like Secretarial Practice & Tailoring 128 seats in +2 Arts class became 160 in 1985-86 with new subject Education. In 1986-87 total seats in +2 Arts class turned to 256 and commerce class was affiliated to CHSE with 64 seats. Science class was opened in +2 stream with 96 seats in 1991-92 session. CHSE granted affiliation to science stream in the same year with some new subjects like Sociology, Home Science and Sanskrit in +2 Arts stream. Utkal University accorded affiliation to this college with 128 seats in Part-I +3 Degree Arts class for the session 1987-88. Students of degree classes are now independent to take subjects like English, Oriya, History Political Science, Economics, Education and Philosophy as their pass subjects. Indian Polity, Indian Economy, Landmarks in Indian History, Philosophy, Education as Elective subjects. Honours classes were introduced in subjects like English, Economics, History and Political Science since 1992-93 Education in 2006-07 and Phillosophy in 2009-10 with University affiliations. Now the college enjoys the credit of permanent affiliation to the Utkal University from the session 1990-91. +3 Science in PCM & CBZ with 32 seats in each has been opened from the session 2004-05, +3 commerce has been opened from the session 2010-11 with - 64 seats. Also Hons. with 16 seats has opened in Physics and Botany at +3 Scince level.

The students strength has been increased from 72 in 1982-83 to 1470. The teaching staff comprising only 7 members with one lady lecturer in 1982 has increased to 35 in 2012-2013 with 4 lady lecturers. The total number of staff members has reached now to 68 with 43 teaching members.

The present pioneering stature and image of J.N. College Kuanpal has fulfilled the aspirations of local people who had dedicated for the cause of education. The college has been standing up with its glorious traditions in the field of conduct of examination, class room teaching, official administration and students discipline. The College hopes to be one of the leading and ideal college on the soil of Mahanga.
